What is an ingrown toenail?

When the nail edge is damaged, the nail no longer fits properly into the side groove, resulting in an ingrown toenail. Pain, swelling, redness, and drainage result when the nail curls downward and digs into the skin. A piece of the nail (known as a lateral pointing spicule) may become embedded in the side tissue, causing the tissue to pile up (hypertrophied).

What causes an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown nails can be caused by a variety of factors, but the two most common are ill-fitting shoes and improper nail trimming. Tight shoes compress the side of the nail, causing the nail to slip out of its groove. The edge of the nail can extend down into the corner of the nail groove if it is peeled off or torn. A torn nail can irritate the skin next to it, causing swelling, pain, and redness, as well as infection.

Can ingrown nails be prevented?

The best way to avoid an ingrown nail is to keep your nails properly trimmed. The corners of the nail should protrude from the end of the toe, and the nails should be cut straight across. To avoid peeling or picking at their toenails, children or teenagers who play with their toes in bed at night can wear socks to bed.

How can I treat my painful nail?

When an ingrown toenail is mildly inflamed (red and sore), soaking the foot in warm water and placing a piece of dry cotton under the nail’s corner may be all that is required. Inflammation (pain, swelling, and drainage) may worsen as the ingrown toenail worsens. At this point, an antibiotic ointment can be used. Your doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics after you’ve seen him or her about the problem. If the problem worsens, surgical removal of a portion of the nail is frequently required.

What is the recommended surgical procedure for ingrown nails?

An ingrown nail is surgically removed by removing a small portion of the side of the nail and destroying the nail bed underneath. Numbing medicine is injected into the toe, and the toenail is cut to create a new, straight nail edge. Because the cells beneath the nail try to grow a new one, they must be destroyed, resulting in a permanently thinner nail. The tissue on the side of the toe that has piled up (hypertrophied) must be removed. The toe is then wrapped in a bandage until it heals completely (a few weeks).

What is the recovery time from my surgery?

On the day of surgery, keep your foot elevated for a few hours and rest; the next day, you can return to work or school. For the first two weeks after surgery, you should avoid running or strenuous exercise.
